This past weekend our family picked up 20,000 honey bees in Manhattan and brought them back to our home in Queens to install in two bee hives that Ruth and the kids (and friends) have been getting ready for weeks. The final process of hiving the bees was done by Ruth and you can see it here below. We are all looking forward to the adventures in beekeeping that await us and the honey that will come soon.

Last night my wife, Ruth, and I attended the 2010 Brooklyn Beekeepers Club’s honey tasting at Nice Pizza (340 Franklin St) in Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn, NY. This year is was an event that also included the New York City Beekeepers Association and Bee Without Borders.

My wife Ruth is a student beekeeper about to set up her first hives in a few weeks and just in time since New York City has just legalized beekeeping in the five boroughs.

The event was a fabulous mix of people from around the city who are avid beekeepers and others who are just getting started. The local beekeeping clubs and associations are a great place for new students to network and learn about beekeeping.

The selection of honey was amazing. Andrew from Bees Without Borders brought honey from Northern Iraq, England and Moldavia. There was local honey represented from New Jersey, Upstate NY, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Jimmy Johnson of the Narrows Botanical Gardens brought some fabulous honey from the hives at the gardens, very light and sweet but not too sweet.  Another favorite of mine was Mad Swarm Honey from Brooklyn

which seemed to me to have a hint of cinnamon flavor. And the Bamboo honey from Van Etten, NY was excellent. The event ended with prizes being drawn for beekeepers tools, supplies, and clothing as well as bee products like honey and candles.

We are looking forward to next years event and to bringing our own honey for everyone to taste.
